Take a ferry to Alcatraz Island where you can enjoy audio-guided tours and see current exhibits. The small island was developed with many different facilities and is maybe the most famous island in the U.S. Some facilities on the island include: a lighthouse, a military fortification, a military prison and a federal prison. It is the site of the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States. In 1972, Alcatraz became a national recreation area due to its fame. The area was recognized and received designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1986. For those truly passionate about Alcatraz history, there is a special Behind the Scenes tour. You will learn a lot but the tour lasts about 5 hours. Furthermore, it is a physically strenuous tour.
